Sphenophyta new Caulfield Cup favourite
07/10/2006 7:25 PM
By Mark Ryan
The Lee Freedman-trained Sphenophyta has replaced Zipping as favourite for the Caulfield Cup following his Turnbull Stakes victory.
Sphenophyta came in from $7 to $4 while the Lloyd Williams-owned Zipping also firmed from $6 to $5 following his eye-catching fifth from a wide barrier in the Turnbull.
Freedman now has three of the top four horses in Caulfield Cup betting with Serenade Rose, equal third in the Turnbull, and Our Smoking Joe, runner-up, both firming as well.
Serenade Rose is in from $9 to $7 while Our Smoking Joe firmed from $11 to $9.
The John Hawkes-trained Headturner (sixth in the Turnbull) and Railings (eighth) are both at $10.
That pair head Melbourne Cup betting at $7 ahead of the David Hayes-trained import Tawqeet who was the big firmer from $13 in to $8 after his impressive victory in the Metropolitan Handicap (2400m) at Randwick.
Tawqeet also firmed markedly in the Caulfield Cup from $26 to $13.
Racing To Win firmed from $4.60 to $3.60 after his Epsom Hcp (1600m) victory at Randwick and is regarded as clearly the main danger to $2.60 favourite El Segundo.
Latest Caulfield Cup betting from Michael Eskander:-
$4 Sphenophyta
$5 Zipping
$7 Serenade Rose
$9 Our Smoking Joe
$10 Headturner, Railings
$13 Tawqeet
